camera obscura

1. See this sweater. It's from Nixxi.  I'll be wearing it a lot over the next month. It's the main attraction of an experiment I'm doing in collaboration with Ef magazine launching the first week of November. Stay tuned.
2. The right light. It's more important to me than any cosmetic I've ever owned. In fact, every year on my birthday, when asked what I want, the answer is always "good lighting."
As of late, I've also become really interested in industrial-like furniture and lamps. I'm hoping to start on a few projects--like this lamp-- that will (hopefully) keep me busy once the temperature drops and my instinct for hibernating kicks in,
3. Two sides of the light on nepean street.
4. I've been wearing a lot of oversized white-ish wool sweaters as messy dresses, in-a-pinch jackets and in ways to make not-so-functional-outfits a dash more sensible.
5. I hate to judge a book by its cover, but overtly metrosexual men make it hard not to. This picture was taken at trio while teasing boys.
6. Last minute riffling
7. Shine on
8. Another perfect sky
9. Photo by Joost Van Den Broek. I first saw it in part of the world photo expo in the summer and it's been stamped in my mind. I can't figure out if its the mona lisa smile, the crop of the image or the damn uniform, but I have become slightly obsessed with it.

Someone told me a few weeks back that I should stop creating for perfection and start creating for fluency. They were referring to my writing and art-making. I like this advice. A lot. I've been giving and taking a lot of advice lately. Seems like all my bitches be having problems. But, I like problems. I like helping people figure their issues out. Not because I think I'm Freud, but because I like smoking cigarettes with people and talking about the truth. I like my own problems too. They have become as dear to me as my shadow. I go through periods of roller-coaster heart palpitations and I often wish my probelms away, but who knows where I'd be or who I'd be without them.

Speaking of roller coasters, I had this strange dream last night that I was famous for falling out of roller coasters while they were running their course, and surviving. I would go on all different types and attendants would assure me that they strapped and secured me in. But, like clockwork, after one loop-de-loop I would slip out of the harness or seat and come barreling towards the ground, only to land on my feet.

If this isn't some kind of strange sub-concious metaphor, then I don't know what is. x

If what they say is true, then the only marriage worth having is the one between bread and butter. Naturally, this can be quite unsettling...especially if you are one of those romantic types. But for those more fixated on fashion than flirting, you know that there is another relationship that will stand the test of time. That relationship is between you and denim.

Denim is a mature fabric; one that ages like a fine Bordeaux. He's timeless, tested and true. Denim looks good  cavorting down the street or modestly tucked under a tree. The more time you spend with denim, the more denim becomes a part of you. He molds into the angles of your hips. He hugs the circumference of your curvature. He figures out how you move and moves that way too.

Sadly, its true. Denim has let you down once or twice. Remember when he said your butt looked great in those bedazzled pockets (that brute!). Or the time when he convinced you that high-waisted was flattering (what a fool). But remember, no one's perfect and to make it in the long-run, forgiveness if key.
Denim has made a few mistakes, but you know he means well. He's just trying to keep you happy; keep things spicy, you know?
So let's hear it for cowboys, daisy dukes and the Canadian tuxedo! Give it up for Calvin! Here's to Levi! Denim, may our future be long and blissful.

just another hot, damp, hopeful weekend

The best parts: listening to Slim Moore and the Mar-Kays, slinking around town in silk dresses, World Press Photo Exhibit, saki and blood-orange juice, turning secrets into sounds, watching woody allen flicks in bed, butterscotch sundaes, laying under the sky at midnight deciphering stars from satellites, an oil-coloured manicure.

Welcome to stone cold fox headquarters: Where the water is warm, the sky is moody and the girls wear boots with not much else:. Welcome to my haven. My home away from home. My getaway. Wakefield. This summer I've been trying to skip town as often as possible and travel to the nookish-destination just a hop-skip and a jump away from Ottawa. There is just something so darn charming about that place that I can't get enough. Although, travel time, its close, but man! does it ever feel like a change of pace. If you know me, then you know my whole hearted love for sneaking off the beaten path, so imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon this deserted private dock made for suggestive lounging and dipping your toes.

If we were having cyber sex right now I would say 'F/WEG/2BZ4UQT?' But I'm not and you're not and we're not. But the facts remain the same.
Life is relatively good and absolutely busy.
Don't let those bottles of Stella in the picture fool you...this girl has been w.o.r.k.i.n.g it like nobody's business .The blog has taking a back seat, but not to fret, it will reclaim the rightful position of shotgun again soon.

Hello hello.
A lot on the go lately. Spent the day editing scripts, planned out my next month worth of projects/gigs and listened to Charles Bradley while scrubbing my spoons and cleaning my sheets.
I'm about to dart out for a quick date with a friend and a stroll before it pours.

why the colour blue you ask?

GAST BOUSCHET, NADINE HILBERT

I don't know the reason why. Maybe because it was the last colour I saw before I realized the things I loved were never obligated to love me too.
I'll tell you what its like to see the world behind cloudy, delicate frames since I was never able to find myself a pair tinted rose. I accept blue because its gauzy and hides the swampy shade my eyes turn in june and november.
I find myself looking up and thinking about how the hottest stars are white and blue. I think about the last glimpse of blue before the sun sets in the sky and when we say bon nuit I think of the moon under your skin. I wonder about people who do things because they believe in them and for other reason at all.

Small victories: purged half of my ever-accumulating wardrobe and am planning the most kick-ass stoop sale Cartier street as ever seen, finalizing plans for a Quebec cottage country getaway, bought my first Mac, filled my house with flowers and willows, started reading American Psycho although still unconvinced it can be as good as the movie.

Wish I had more time to write something.....anything. But, I'm blogging on the run and all I've got for you is a quick outfit post.
I have been pretty crafty lately; making accessories from found bits at a hardware store and clothing out of everything but fabric. Tonight I am going to the kingdom of leather, somewhere in Quebec. I've been told it is like sacred ground....a warehouse full of supple hide. All different colours and textures. So many possibilities! If I'm not back by the morn...send a search party.

OFW and a weekend that made my head spin

I`ve been sleepless and wild for days. Its Tuesday and just now do I have time to finally post about my weekend at Ottawa Fashion Week and the Arc Hotel. I worked all weekend, but luckily for me my job was to hang out with artist-types in hotel rooms drinking vodka, taking pictures and talking about the finer things.

OFW. I saw, I mingled, I drank, I interviewed and I am pretty sure I posed for some after-party photos that will one day bite me in the ass. Oh well. What are are weekends for but to roll around hotel beds wearing heels?

I've got to honest, I tend to be a wee bit skeptical  of fashion events in the capital and I am yet to wowed ( but don't mind my snobbery).... I do however support any and all local initiatives. I know that any fashion-related event in Ottawa is easily shrugged off as superficial, meaningless and laughable, and this I completely disagree with. There is something bubbling in Ottawa lately that I feel has been a long time coming. It seems like people are tired of mindlessly complaining about what is wrong with the culture in Ottawa and finally doing something about it.
So, I say unless YOU have designed an entire collection or unless YOU have organized a well-executed, large-sclae event like OFW, then you can shut your trap.

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing the designer Adrian Wu and will be publishing that article soon. He received a lot of fanfare for his avant-garde, experimental collection and after speaking to him, it is entirely well-deserved. Not only is he maniacally creative, but the man is intelligent, humble and knows what he eff he is taking about. He is fully aware of why he is involved in fashion and views it as a true artist does.
More to come soon on Adrian ! But now its time for party photos.
